Scandi Vase (M)

Sculpted by hand in Lombok, Indonesia. It is created from terracotta, one of the world's oldest sculpting materials. Each family has its own wheel, the vase is spun on a table by hand and the decorative motif applied using homemade combs. Finally, the vase is finished with layer upon layer of white and gold paint applied by hand over many days and then combed off to slowly reveal the colours underneath.

The drying process remains as it was 100 years ago: the vase is dried in a low-heat, open-air kiln, using coconut husks as fuel.

Note: As terracotta is not 100% waterproof, these vases as best used for decoration rather than water usage.
